Seems pretty fun, I really like the league ideas you have. Perhaps you'd consider adding "powerups" for one of the leagues. These may include supply drops for villages to let a village survive underpopulation for one turn or something similar to survive overpopulation. I really like the idea of the forest tiles being invisible, perhaps another powerup could be to make a village invisible or even to scan an area for invisible enemy villages. I'll be looking forward to updates on this! Also R.I.P. John Conway, I only just heard about this when reading this game.

overall i like the game, you got an upvote from me not sure i like the periodic boundaries idea, but i guess it's ok to leave it there's a few mistakes in the statement, for example: "Every even round no the following rules" not sure what you were trying to say with this another mistake: "A village dies because of overpopulation if only four" best to leave out the "only" here sprites aren't the most important part, but getting more visually appealing village and landscape sprites could boost popularity also have you considered adding optional player messages for the output?

Thanks for your feedback. I probably won't include player inputs. Adding them to fields would result in way too many entities and too much information on screen (and would overcomplicate the output). Adding them to the dog tags would have no advantage over STDERR considering debugging purposes and would be just a gimmick. I won't focus on the graphics. But I am thinking about different Sprites for villages and empty fields in the terrain league (cf. bottom of description).

A very nice idea! I did not think hard about strategy yet, but a minor detail that's a a bit annoying: if the command ends with a trailing space, there is a "not a number" error message. It would be nicer if the referee ignored it.

I like the idea and the game. The viewer needs to be more interesting and perhaps display more information. I would place players on either side of the gird. Also, consider adding tooltips to the play grid, so when you hover with your mouse over a cell, it displays the row and col.

Thank you. I've added tooltips to cells and scores. Because I wanted to show current ranks, I decided not to place user info on either side of the grid but instead rearrange them every round (as seen in "Back to the Code"). That's why I changed the objective: Conquering cells is now more important than placing many villages. This way, the scores don't change less often (still frequent in the beginning, but I think that's ok).
